An 18-year-old kitchen, transformed rather than replaced
The kitchen was 18 years old, but the layout still worked and the carcasses were sound. Replacing it would have meant paying again for things that did not need changing, so we kept the layout and changed the colour, the work surfaces and the sink instead.
What was done
- Cabinetry sprayed in Farrow & Ball Vert de Terre
- The doors and drawer fronts were sprayed rather than hand painted, which gives an even, factory-smooth finish. The green was chosen because the room takes plenty of daylight and the previous pale scheme looked flat in it.
- Lightly veined quartz work surfaces
- Quartz was specified for the run because it takes daily use without sealing, and the light veining keeps the worktop from reading as a solid dark band across the room.
- New undermount sink
- Fitting the sink under the quartz rather than on top of it removes the rim, so the worktop wipes straight through into the bowl.
The result
- A different-looking kitchen for a fraction of the cost of replacement, because the cabinets, appliances and plumbing all stayed where they were.
- What worked was kept. Only the colour, the surfaces and the sink changed.
A refresh is often the right answer when the layout still works but the finishes have dated.
