Kitchen Refresh · Brinkworth
A 16-year-old kitchen kept, with new doors and Dekton worktops
Photographed after fitting in Brinkworth.
Mr & Mrs Thomas's German kitchen was 16 years old. Its simple slab doors were vinyl-wrapped MDF, and the wrapping was starting to peel. The dark laminate worktops were also showing their age, with swelling at the joints.
A home visit showed that the cabinetry was in good condition and the layout worked well. There was no need to replace the whole kitchen, so the refresh concentrated on the worn finishes and the damaged panels instead.
What was done
- Replacement handleless doors
- New J-pull doors, painted in a mid green, replaced the peeling slab fronts. The integrated pull gives the kitchen a handleless finish while the existing carcasses stay exactly where they are.
- Workshop-made beech panels
- The chipboard panels behind the sink and peninsula were damaged. Replacement panels, veneered in steamed beech, were made at the workshop and fitted in their place.
- Dekton worktops in Dunna
- The ageing laminate worktops were replaced with Dekton in Dunna, updating the work surfaces without changing the layout.
- A matching study area
- The adjoining study area was updated in the same style and colours, with replacement doors, a new worktop and new plinths.
- New lighting
- Under-cabinet and plinth LED lighting was fitted through the kitchen and the study area, giving task light at the work surfaces and a soft glow at floor level.
The result
- The kitchen and study area now share one consistent finish, with the sound cabinetry and practical layout retained.
- The peeling doors, swollen worktops and damaged panels were replaced, and nothing else was disturbed.
Where the carcasses are sound and the layout works, replacing the doors, work surfaces and panels is usually the cheaper route to a kitchen that looks new.
“We contacted Nick when we were looking to upgrade our 16 year old, tired looking kitchen. He took us through a comprehensive decision making process in a calm, patient, honest and straightforward way. When he carried out the installation, we were extremely impressed with his level of skill and ability to find practical solutions where necessary. The result is a very high quality kitchen which we are delighted with. We recommend Nick without reservation. He is a craftsman of real talent with design 'know how', matched with complete reliability and absolute attention to detail. It has been a pleasure to have him craft our new kitchen.”
