Creating more storage while keeping cottage character in Great Somerford

This cottage kitchen in Great Somerford needed replacing. The challenge was to accommodate plenty of storage while keeping its charm and character intact.

During the home visit, several ideas and options were discussed. Rather than installing fitted cabinetry throughout, the decision was to design a bespoke dresser as a natural centrepiece alongside the new fitted cabinetry.

Designing, building and installing the dresser

A dresser alongside fitted cabinetry: The bespoke dresser was designed, built and installed to complement the new fitted cabinetry, rather than extending fitted units throughout the kitchen. The half-width upper section prevented blocking in front of the window.
Six doors and two drawers: The dresser incorporated 6 doors and 2 drawers, addressing the need for plenty of storage.
Glazed doors and display lighting: Glazed upper doors and LED spotlights allowed decorative glassware to be displayed as part of the dresser.
Cost and time: The cost range was £3,000 to £5,000. The work took several weeks in the workshop and 1 day on site.

Storage and a natural centrepiece

The completed dresser complemented the new fitted cabinetry, providing storage without relying on fitted units throughout the kitchen.
The glazed upper section provided a place to display decorative glassware, illuminated by LED spotlights.

For this Great Somerford kitchen, the bespoke dresser brought storage and display together in a design shaped around the cottage’s character.
